With more LGBTQ families behind the scenes, expect to see greater representation of those families onstage. Referencing last year’s Off-Broadway premieres of Dada Woof Papa Hot and Steve , as well as Terrence McNally’s Mothers and Sons , which played Broadway in 2014, Roth and Jackson tease that there are plays with similar subjects in development. “LGBTQ playwrights who’ve become parents are now writing about their experiences,” Jackson explains, “and one day our children and their peers will make art about their own experiences.”
Because of society's reluctance to admit that lesbians exist, a high degree of certainty is expected before historians or biographers are allowed to use the label. Evidence that would suffice in any other situation is inadequate here... A woman who never married, who lived with another woman, whose friends were mostly women, or who moved in known lesbian or mixed gay circles, may well have been a lesbian... But this sort of evidence is not 'proof'. What our critics want is incontrovertible evidence of sexual activity between women. This is almost impossible to find.
Here we find only four significant differences, although the differences either are not indicative of any LM/GF disadvantage (., sexual self-identification and having a same-sex romantic relationship) or do not gauge adult experiences (., receiving public assistance in childhood and sense of safety and security while growing up). These patterns also are highly fragile and based in part on a couple of influential cases or outliers. Admittedly, even with a large overall sample, a subsample of 51 cases still limits the statistical power of the analysis. Still, the results are either inconclusive or suggestive that adult children raised by same-sex two-parent families show a comparable adult profile to their peers raised by two-biological-parent families.
